The weather has always been a real passion for Ross for several different reasons. Raised up on a family farm and ranch just outside of Geneseo, it was easy to see how the weather affected almost every aspect of agriculture and how important it was for him to know what kind of weather was on the horizon. Ross began attending storm spotter training classes with his father while he was still in middle school because he desired to learn more about thunderstorms.

When Ross was in high school, he began interning at KWCH in hopes of learning more about weather and forecasting and seeing firsthand what the broadcast world included. Plus the help of a charitable foundation in Ellsworth, he was able to install a weather station in the high school so that other learners could watch the weather change throughout the day.

Ross’s broadcast career began at 19 years of age at Channel 6 in Lawrence where he had the chance to serve as both the morning meteorologist and as a Chief for a period of 2 years. He has done some fill-in work at WIBW in Topeka and then went to Wichita in 2004 to serve at KWCH. Ross received the National Weather Association Seal of Approval in 2004 and also earned the Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation in 2006 from the American Meteorological Society.

He doesn’t have a great deal of spare time, but when possible, he likes mowing and landscape. In addition, Ross also likes traveling back home to help on the family farm and ranch.

In July 2020 was near normal with respect to temperatures. There were no major heat waves in Kansas as well as the number of 100 degree days was limited across the state. The month will have some hot stretches before the end of the month. Besides, the end of our first week of July looks rather warm (highs mid to upper 90s possible), but an extended heatwave for Kansas is very UNLIKELY. The bigger high pressure (or the heat dome) should remain west of us for a good part of the month, as well as that will keep temperatures from getting out of control around Kansas.
