Rose started out as a gilder and restorer, before joining her mother, Hilary Batstone, in her interior business. Later, she set up shop under her own name further down Pimlico Road in 2009. She can’t identify the moment when it really took off, but she has expanded the shop and the studio, and in the past year the business has doubled in size.
She deals with antiques, furniture, and textiles. The collection on display includes works by eminent designers and architects including Tomaso Buzzi, Hans Wegner, and Hans Vollmer, and is marked by a notable use of seasonal autumnal tones. Rich orange and vibrant coppers are featured across both fabric and materials.
Highlights include a wicker chair covered in Rose “Conker”, a rusty orange corduroy, an art nouveau copper pot by Jean Dunand, and a bronze and silver vase by Arisu Bizan. Each is displayed against a backdrop of “Hickory”, an intense and earthy brown from the latest collection of Rose Paint.
Rose Uniacke House
Rose’s family lives in a Georgian townhouse in Islington. She describes her London townhouse, which originally functioned as an artist’s studio, as “monastery meets Venetian palazzo.” Here the family poodle, Errol, stands beside the sleek travertine pool, located on the basement floor.
The house opens into a hallway almost stately in scale: a sweep of stone stairs, a fireplace, and a work by Carl Andre posing as a rug. Commissioned by the society portrait painter James Rannie Swinton in the late 1850s—and thought to be the first purpose-built artist’s studio in London—it was designed with impressive proportions, the better to cultivate wealthy patrons.
Rose Uniacke Lighting
Rose Plaster Cone Wall Lights now are available in 2 different sizes: 20cm or 27.5cm high, and with 4 different arm finishes: Dark Bronze, Nickel, Antique Brass, and Antiue Silver. Each shade is entirely handmade in the UK in a craft workshop. Made from a mixture of fiberglass powder and plaster, which is then laminated into a mold and left to dry, then trimmed. Lastly, wet plaster is applied by hand, creating an outer texture, which is then finished in a snow-white water-based paint.
