His career kicked off working as a general news reporter and, for a time, the rock and pop writer with the South Wales Echo in Cardiff. From 1983 to 1987 he worked as a speechwriter and researcher for the Labour Party. After graduating from LSE, he was taken on as a trainee producer by the BBC and was appointed editor of the Today program in 1998. Moreover, his program Today received several awards under his leadership.
He wrote a column for The Guardian while working for Today. His column led The Daily Telegraph to accuse Rod of bias and of endangering democracy.
