Rissi Palmer is an American country music artist who debuted with the single “Country Girl” in 2007. The single made her the first African-American woman to chart a country song after Dona Mason did so in 1987. The single peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

Also, “Country Girl” served as the lead-off single to  Rissi’s self-titled debut album. The album produced the No. 59 hit “Hold On to Me” as well. Rissi covered an R&B hit “No Air” in 2008 originally performed by Jordin Sparks and Chris Brown.

At the age of 12, she and her family moved to Eureka, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis. Rissi’s mother died when Rissi was only 7 years old and she says that her mother “was a huge Patsy Cline fan.”

She performed country music at the Arkansas State Fair at the age of 16. R&B producers James “Jimmy Jam” Harris III and Terry Lewis gave Rissi a deal on their Flyte Tyme Records when she was only 19. However, she rejected the deal saying that they wanted to turn her “twangy” country style into a “pop/soul hybrid.”

After that, she sang jingles for Barbie commercials and recorded music for the Dance Fever television show. Also, Rissi competed on Star Search. She did all that for 7 years just to land a Nashville recording contract but her efforts were all in vain. She became one of several African-American artists featured in the 2014 documentary titled Waiting in the Wings: African-Americans in Country Music.

The documentary highlighted the contributions of African-Americans in country music and at the same time questioned why few have found success in the genre. This documentary aired on February 27, 2004, on CMT. In 2007, Rissi, Emily King, and Jean Baylor (formerly of Zhane) performed at the 2nd Annual Black Girls Rock ceremony.

On August 26, 2008, she was at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver to show her support for Barack Obama. In December 2008, Rissi was among the invited performer at the White House for the National Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Currently, she serves as the host of Apple Music Country’s show called  Color Me Country Radio with Rissi Palmer. The show debuted on Apple Music Country on August 30, 2020. It has s featured interviews with artists such as Crystal Shawanda, The War and Treaty, Mickey Guyton, Darius Rucker, among others.

Also, the show has a newly discovered act from the 1960s, Sarge & Shirley West. The show was named after Linda Martell’s ( country artist ) debut album. In 1969, Linda was the first to appear on the Grand Ole Opry. She also became the highest-charting solo black woman on the Billboard Country Chart.

Rissi collaborated with Rainey Day Fund ( Apple Music Country Host Kelly McCartney’s fund) to established the Color Me Country Artist Grant Fund partnership as an offshoot of the show so as “to support the underrepresented voices of BIPOC artists in country music”. The fund was established on December 18, 2020. 100% of the fund goes to artist grants.

Previously, she starred in and hosted a Travel Channel show called Rissi Palmer’s Country set to explore the music of a given city. The pilot episode of the show focused on the blues in Chicago and aired on February 28, 2009 though it was not taken to series. In 2009, Rissi parted ways with 1720 Entertainment following a year and a half-long legal dispute.
