Richard Allen Stengel is an American author, editor, and former government official. He served as the 16th managing editor of Time magazine from 2006 to 2013. From 2004 to 2006, Richard was chief executive of the National Constitution Center. He also served as President Obama’s Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs. Richard held this role from 2014 to 2016.

Nelson Mandela ( Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela) was a South African anti-apartheid activist born on July 18, 1918, in Mvezo, Union of South Africa. He served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. Mandela became the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election. Both Richard and Mandela collaborated in writing Mandela’s autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. The book was first published in 1994 by Little Brown & Co. It profiles Mandela’s early life, coming of age, education and 27 years spent in prison. Also, Richard was a co-producer of the 1996 documentary film titled Mandela. This documentary was nominated for an Academy Award. Mandela was godfather to Richard’s oldest son, Gabriel.
