Richard Neer is an American sports radio personality and disc jockey. He has been involved in and has chronicled key changes in music as well as sports radio. Richard launched his radio career as a student at Adelphi University. After his graduation, he worked at Long Island, New York’s WLIR. There, Richard became one of the early adopters of the freeform or progressive rock radio format.
In 1971, he became part of the airstaff of progressive rock radio powerhouse WNEW-FM based in New York City. There, Richard worked as a disc jockey, he used to do mornings for eight good years over three different eras. Also, Richard served as a program director for five years. He had a friendly relationship with Bruce Springsteen for a while and Bruce would call into his late-night show. He played a part in bringing Springsteen’s music to a wider audience.

Richard witnessed the growth of the format as well as its gradual shift into a more rigid, programmed, classic rock-driven product. He describes the transformation in his 2001 book titled FM: The Rise and Fall of Rock Radio. Concurrently, in 1987, Richard started working as a sports radio talk show host at New York station WNEW-AM. He then joined WFAN the following year and WFAN became the first and most visible of the successful all-sports format radio stations.
He broadcasted on the last day of music at WNEW-FM in 1999. Richard returned to the same station for a bit after its switch to a “hot talk” format that replaced the “Sports Guys” who hosted “Sports in the Morning—powered by the FAN.” He hosted “hot talk” until the channel started stunting CHR prior to its flip to Blink. He remained with WFAN doing sports talk, working Saturday mornings, and also some nights.
His call-in show was after Mets fans registered disapproval of the team’s decision to run ads that were targeted at Latinos. Richard hosted New York Giants NFL broadcasts for a few years. His unemotional style of speaking has prompted sports media reporter for the New York Daily News, Bob Raissman to refer to Richard as “Sir Sominex,” suggesting that his delivery is soporific.
