Richard Land ( Richard D. Land) is an American pastor and author. He currently serves as the president of Southern Evangelical Seminary based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Richard assumed this post in July 2013. Previously, he served as the president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC). ERLC is the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention in the United States.

Richard held this post from 1988 to 2013. He stepped down in the wake of his controversial comments regarding the Trayvon Martin case.  On October 23, 2013, Richard announced his intention to retire with immediate effect and Russell D. Moore filled the post. From 2002 to 2012, he hosted the nationally syndicated radio program called  Richard Land Live. Currently, Richard serves as the executive editor of The Christian Post.

Currently, Richard serves as the president of the Southern Evangelical Seminary. Former USA President George W. Bush appointed Richard to the U.S. Commission in 2001 on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). USCIRF is a federal agency created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998. The purpose of USCIRF is to monitor the freedom of conscience, thought, and religion abroad. Richard was the primary author of an open letter titled “Land letter” sent to President George W. Bush by leaders of the religious right in October 2002.

The letter outlined a “just war” argument in support of the subsequent 2003 invasion of Iraq. In June 2004, Richard was reappointed by Bush for a second term. In July 2005, he was reappointed by Majority Leader Bill Frist. Richard ended his term on the commission in 2011, after almost a decade of service. Bush appointed  Richard to serve on the Honorary Delegation to accompany him to Jerusalem for the 60th anniversary of the State of Israel in May 2008. Richard has been appointed to a Board of Reference for the establishment of the Judge Paul Pressler School of Law based in Shreveport, Louisiana.

In December 2012, in the aftermath of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, Richard appeared in an NPR interview and had comments regarding the use of a weapon. He said that if he finds that someone tried to do harm to someone else, he believes that he has a moral and Christian obligation to do whatever he can – with the least amount of violence necessary. Richard added “…but if necessary, lethal violence to stop them from harming others. That’s loving my neighbor as myself. That’s doing unto others as I would have them do unto me.”
