Richard Hammond is an English journalist, television presenter, mechanic, and writer. He became known for co-hosting the BBC Two car program Top Gear from 2002 until 2015 with Jeremy Clarkson and James May. In 2016, Richard started presenting The Grand Tour television series. He co-present the show with his former Top Gear co-hosts, Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

In November 2016, Richard, with Clarkson and May, launched the automotive social media website DriveTribe, where he regularly provides content on his tribe “Hammond’s Fob Jockeys”. He has also presented Brainiac: Science Abuse, Planet Earth Live, and Total Wipeout.

On 20 September 2006, during the filming of a Top Gear segment at the former RAF Elvington airbase near York, Richard was injured in the crash of the jet-powered car he was piloting. He was traveling at 319 mph (513 km/h) at the time of the crash. His vehicle, a dragster called Vampire, was theoretically capable of traveling at speeds of up to 370 mph (595 km/h).

Some accounts suggested that the accident occurred during an attempt to break the British land speed record. The Health and Safety Executive report on the crash found that a proposal to try to officially break the record was vetoed in advance by Top Gear executive producer Andy Wilman, due to the risks and complexities of such a venture
