Rashawn Ray is an American Professor of Sociology at the University of Maryland, College Park, and Executive Director of the Lab for Applied Social Science Research (LASSR). He also serves as a Senior Fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution.
Since 2017, Ray has been the editor of Contexts magazine, published by the American Sociological Association, with co-editor Fabio Rojas. His research addresses the mechanisms that manufacture and maintain racial and social inequality with a particular focus on police-civilian relations and men’s treatment of women.
Ray’s work also speaks to ways that inequality may be attenuated through racial uplift activism and social policy. He has written for New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, POLITICO, and Business Insider among others.
