Rafer Weigel is a popular American broadcast journalist currently working as a news anchor and reporter at KUSI-TV in San Diego since November 2022. Before, Rafer worked as a morning weekday news anchor and general assignment reporter at WFLD-Channel 32 in Chicago. Prior to that, Rafer served as the weekend sports anchor and reporter at WLS-TV in Chicago, the sports anchor at CNN HLN’s Morning Express with Robin Meade, and also an actor.

His first on-camera journalism tenure came in 2005 as a freelance reporter at KUSI for the weekend morning show—doing live remotes at events and reporting breaking news. Rafer proceeded to work nights at The L.A. Times and mornings for the TV station. In February 2006, Rafer became hired by the CBS-owned and operated station KOVR in Sacramento as a general assignment reporter, reporting breaking news, politics, and national stories such as the Lake Tahoe wildfires and wayward whales Delta and Dawn.

In February 2008, Rafer joined the cast of the already-successful morning show Morning Express alongside Robin Meade. Rafer and the CNN sports team extensively reported the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In March 2011, Rafer was the new weekend sports anchor and reporter at WLS Channel 7 in Chicago, a station where his dad spent 17 years working as an anchor.

Rafer replaced Ryan Chiaverini, who worked as a co-host of Channel 7’s morning show “Windy City Live,” a role Rafer himself had been under consideration for.  In addition, Rafer decided to return to his “news” roots and in October 2014 accepted the anchor role for the 6 pm and 10 pm shows Monday-Friday at the Fox affiliate KTVI, Channel 2 in St. Louis.

Following leaving KUSI in 2006, Rafer became the lead general assignment reporter at the CBS-owned and operated station KOVR-TV in Sacramento where Rafer covered wildfires in Lake Tahoe and many elections. In 2008, Rafer moved to Atlanta to work as the sports anchor for CNN/HLN’s “The Morning Express with Robin Meade.” He continued his sports career coming back to his hometown of Chicago in 2011 as a sports anchor/reporter at ABC 7—the station where his late dad, Tim Weigel, an iconic sportscaster ruled the airwaves in the 80s and 90s.

While following in his dad’s footsteps was meaningful, his true passion is news. In 2014, Rafer became the evening news anchor at Fox 2, KTVI-TV in St. Louis where he worked for three years. In 2017, Rafer came back to Windy City as a weekend anchor/reporter and later became the morning news anchor for “Good Day Chicago”.
