On October 17, 2017, Portia had slurred speech and started to sound like she was having a stroke. She was immediately rushed to the hospital and in the Er, her brain scans were clear. Additionally, there was no blood clot, aneurysm, or sign of a stroke. Portia went for further tests at Emory University Hospital where she was diagnosed with psychogenic stuttering, a disease that is triggered by trauma. Before her illness surfaced, Portia was dealing with a difficult story of a lost newborn who was later found murdered by the father.
Additionally, her illness was also triggered by a lot of stress including her divorce and pushing herself too hard to be the best mother and reporter. After her diagnosis, Portia took a work leave of three months to begin her journey of recovering. Portia recovered from the illness through the help of a family therapist, speech pathologist, and meditation coach.
