His career kicked off in New York City in the early 1980s where he was contributing comics and illustrations to various underground newspapers and pornography magazines. He then co-published the all-comics tabloid Comical Funnies with former staffers of Punk magazine from 1980 to 1981. Peter joined a long professional association with the alternative-comics publisher Fantagraphics in 1985 and had a solo series Neat Stuff.
