Newt Gingrich ( Full Name: Newton Leroy Gingrich) is a popular American politician and author who was the 50th speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 until 1998. He is the author of Lessons Learned the Hard Way. Newt is a fellow at conservative think tanks the American Enterprise Institute and Hoover Institution. He at times works as a commentator, guest, or panel member on cable news shows, such as the Fox News Channel. Newt is listed as a contributor by Fox News Channel, and frequently appears as a guest on various segments; he has also hosted occasional specials for the Fox News Channel.

He has signed the “Strong America Now” pledge committing to promoting Six Sigma methods to reduce government spending. He founded Advocates for Opioid Recovery together with former Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy and Van Jones, a former domestic policy adviser to President Barack Obama. A member of the Republican Party, Newt was the U.S. representative for Georgia’s 6th congressional district serving north Atlanta and nearby areas from 1979 until his resignation in 1999. In 2012, Newt unsuccessfully ran for the Republican nomination for president of the United States.

A professor of history and geography at the University of West Georgia in the 1970s, Newt won election to the U.S. House of Representatives in November 1978, the first Republican in the history of Georgia’s 6th congressional district to do so. Newt worked as House Minority Whip from 1989 to 1995. A co-author and architect of the “Contract with America”, Newt was a major leader in the Republican victory in the 1994 congressional election.
