Early in his career, Neil appeared on The One Show and Time Team.

He served as the co-presenter of the first series of Coast in 2005 and took over from Nicholas Crane as the show’s main presenter for the second, third, fourth, and fifth series. Also, Neil presented Coast Australia in 2013 and Coast New Zealand in 2016. He served as the presenter of a number of historical documentaries for the BBC from 2006 to 2018.

Neil presented A History of Scotland in 2008 and Sacred Wonders of Britain in 2013. He wrote and presented a three-part series titled Vikings on the Vikings in 2012. Neil was announced as a presenter for GB News in April 2021. Currently, he hosts a weekly current affairs and interview program on the channel.

He went on to say that he “liked the status quo”. Thousands signed petitions calling on him to resign after he was appointed President of the National Trust for Scotland. In the midst of a row about his admiration for the historian David Starkey in June 2020, Neil announced that he was resigning from the National Trust for Scotland board.

He pointed out that he was “stepping down ‘as intended’ after his three-year term in the role comes to an end in September 2020. Neil reasserted his personal opposition to Scottish independence in December 2020, describing the uncertainty caused by the prospect of a second referendum as a “cancerous presence,” adding that “I’m a British citizen, that’s how I see myself. Not in an argumentative way, I don’t see that I should have to cede my right to understand myself as I am to some politician.”

On GB News, Neil spoke on the subject of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. He said that he would be honest and that he did not know what was happening in Ukraine. Neil doesn’t understand it either and he does know that he doesn’t trust Putin, or the government, or Europe’s governments, or the governments of North America either. “I certainly don’t trust any of them to tell the truth”.He added.
