Nathaniel Bassey is a Nigerian music artist, pastor, trumpeter, and gospel songwriter. He is famously known for his songs “Imela”, “Onise Iyanu” and “Olowogbogboro.” Nathaniel attends the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and is a youth pastor at The Oasis Lagos, The Youth Church of the RCCG Kings Court in VI, Lagos.

Moreover, he is the convener of the popular Halleluyah Challenge that is followed by a multitude of Christians, worldwide. He received an Awards of City People Music Award for Gospel Artist of the Year.

He was born and raised in Ikot Ofon Ikono, Lagos by his father Joshua Bassey, and his mother. Nathaniel’s father was a minister in The Apostolic Church Bashua Assembly. He developed a passion for both music and the gospel at an early age. He was inspired when he saw Dr. Panam Percy Paul, a prominent Nigerian gospel music icon in a concert.

Nathaniel commenced his music ministry in 1993. Growing up, he listened to lots of instrumentals, highlife, Rex Lawson, Jazz, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davies, and many more. While young, Nathaniel wanted to be a super Jazz musician doing Afrocentric, and Jazz.

As a result, he played Jazz with his trumpet at parties and clubs, until his life narrative changed. All his life it had always been about music until he got born again.  Nathaniel had an encounter with God and all about music stopped being and it became all about knowing God. Music became an instrument and a platform to show forth God’s love.

He began his musical career in the church where he joined the Rhodes Orchestra. Nathaniel played the trumpet for two years. Later, he composed a song during the visit to Stella Obasanjo, the late wife of former president Olusegun Obasanjo. In 2018, Nathaniel was one of the leading artists in the Nigerian Christian gathering. His first album Elohim was recorded and mixed in Cape Town, South Africa in 2008.

Nathaniel Bassey Hallelujah Challenge

Nathaniel started the #HallelujahChallenge in June 2017. Together, with other believers worshiped God for an hour, from 12:00 am to 1:00 am. He streamed this event on his Instagram page and invited others to join him. In less than a month, the event had over 600,000 views. 2020 #HallelujahChallenge was held from February 4 to 24. In 2021, it became held from February 1 to 21.
