Monique Truong ( Monique T.D. Truong) is a Vietnamese American writer currently based in Brooklyn, New York. She is a Yale University and Columbia University School of Law graduate. Monique has written multiple books and novels. The first novel titled The Book of Salt was published in 2003 by Houghton-Mifflin.
The novel was a national bestseller and won the 2003 Bard Fiction Prize. Also, The Book of Salt won the Stonewall Book Award-Barbara Gittings Literature Award. Monique has also co-written another book titled Watermark: Vietnamese American Poetry & Prose, along with Barbara Tran and Luu Truong Khoi. The inspiration for The Book of Salt came from reading in The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook published in 1954 that Alice and Stein had employed “Indo-Chinese” cooks. It explores themes of diaspora, sexuality, race, and national identity. The novel won countless literary awards, including the Bard Fiction Prize, the New York Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award, and a Stonewall Book Award.

Monique’s novels have been translated into fourteen languages to date.
She wrote the food column, Ravenous, in T: The New York Times Style Magazine from 2011 to 2012. Also, Monique received two James Beard Award nominations for contributing to Gourmet. She has written essays on a variety of topics, including the Vietnam War, racism, food, and the American South. Those essays have appeared in The Washington Post, The Oprah Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times.
Monique has written the lyrics for a choral work and a song cycle in collaboration with the composer/performer/sound artist Joan La Barbara. Currently, she works on a libretto for an opera inspired by Joseph Cornell and Virginia Woolf. She as well serves as vice president of The Authors Guild.
