Mike received the Willie Mac Award for his spirit and leadership in 1985 and 1986. He appeared in Game 4 of the 1987 National League Championship Series during his postseason game. Furthermore, he underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his pitching shoulder on June 30, 1989. He spent three seasons on the disabled list for bursitis. Mike retired in March 1990during his 14th season game posting a 124–117 record with 1,478 strikeouts and a 3.90 ERA in 2190.1 innings pitched.
