Mike Duncan Revolutions | Podcast

Revolutions podcast has been airing since September 15, 2013. It covers modern political revolutions, starting with the English Revolution. Each and every season is dedicated to one revolution or revolutionary wave where it discusses the revolution through a chronological narrative approach such as in Mike’s podcast The History of Rome. However,  the shorter time periods and longer episode length for every season give room for greater detail for individual events.

Seasons start with one or two episodes that are dedicated to the pre-history of the revolution as well as its causes. Sometimes, it highlights when and how the revolution could have been avoided.  Previously, Mike had planned to limit his podcast to 12-15 episodes per revolution. However,  with the English Civil War and the American Revolution, he ran over that self-imposed limit and decided to give up on it for the French Revolution.

It ultimately ended up being 54 episodes excluding supplemental episodes. The series has covered the Mexican Revolution, the Paris Commune, the Revolutions of 1848, the July Revolution, Simon Bolivar and Gran Colombia, the Haitian Revolution, the French Revolution, the American Revolution, the English Civil War, as well as the Russian Revolution, which was announced to be the show’s last in January 2020.

Benjamin Wittes called the podcast “informative, engaging, told in Duncan’s usual easygoing, somewhat comic style that packs a lot of history into relatively brief discussions” after he listened to the first two episodes of Revolutions. Each episode is introduced by a clip from the second movement of Joseph Haydn’s Symphony 92 (Oxford). As a podcaster, Mike is believed to have coined the phrase “The entropy of victory”,   so as to describe the recurring division that happened after a successful revolt, or coup d’état, among the victors.

Mike Duncan Russian Revolution

Revolutions podcast had supplemental episodes that are special episodes not included in the normal number of episodes. Those special episodes have a varying length compared to rough half-hour normal episodes. Some of those episodes focus in-depth on a particular topic or person. Other episodes are verbatim reproductions of historical texts e.g the French Declaration of the Rights of the Man and of the Citizen or the United States Declaration of Independence.

Inspiration for the Revolutions podcast came from a deep personal interest from his teenage years. When Mike was really getting into history as a teenager, the American Revolution was his favorite period of American history. Mike spent a whole period of time being into the Russian Revolution.
