In 2002, Michelle was kidnapped by Ariel Castro in Cleveland, Ohio, and held captive. Castro sexually abused her for more than a decade but was rescued in May 2013. Michelle had been offered a ride by Castro on that fateful August day ( On August 23, 2002). Since she knew one of Castro’s daughters, she accepted the lift. She also agreed to enter Castro’s Cleveland home, located at 2207 Seymour Avenue after promising her to give her a puppy for her son.
Once inside, Michelle was restrained and imprisoned and that was the beginning of years of torture. After her disappearance, her family reported her missing. However, most people came to believe that Michelle had run away on her own after she was distraught over losing her son to foster care and unable to deal with the negative turn her life had taken. Despite that, her mother continued to post fliers about her daughter.

Two other young women named Amanda Berry and Georgina DeJesus were later abducted by Castro. Michelle was forced to deliver the child Berry gave birth to while in captivity. Castro left his house on May 6, 2013, and that was when Berry managed to get to the front door and scream for help. She managed to get the attention of a neighbor. Berry escaped and called 911. The authorities who arrived at the scene soon rescued Michele and DeJesus. After her release, Michelle was brought to the hospital; having been severely beaten by Castro. She suffered a loss of vision and nerve damage.
Michelle’s mother told the press that she hoped to reunite with her and get a chance to introduce Michelle to a younger sister who had been born during the time she was captive. However, Michelle chose to avoid her family after leaving the hospital. Castro was sentenced to live imprisonment in August 2013. Michelle stated, “I’ve got my life back. I spent 11 years in hell. Now your hell is just beginning.” On September 3, 2013, Castro hanged himself in prison.
