Michael Squires is an American journalist working as a ProPublica’s Southwest editor. Before ProPublica, Michael worked for The Arizona Republic as an investigative editor. The journalist conceived of and ran an investigation of special interests for two years. He investigated the use of fill-in-the-blank legislation to spread their agendas.
The investigation revealed that at least 10,000 bills in statehouses nationwide had been copied from draft language that special interests wrote. The draft represented the nation’s largest unreported influence campaign. A collaboration between USA Today, the Republic, and the Center for Public Integrity came up with a project that won, among other awards the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting.
Michael also assisted in shaping key elements of the Republic as well as USA Today’s 2018 Pulitzer Prize-winning project called “The Wall.” Previously, Michael spent a whole decade working as a reporter, columnist, and editor in Las Vegas. While there, he led teams covering state and federal policy and politics.
