Merrick Garland is an American lawyer, jurist, and attorney general of the United States. He served as a United States circuit judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Garland has served on that court since 1997.

Merrick Garland Family

Garland was born in Chicago to his father Cyril Garland and his mother Shirley. He grew up in the northern suburb of Lincolnwood in the Chicago area. Garland’s mother was a director of volunteer services at Chicago’s Council for Jewish Elderly. His father headed Garland Advertising, which is a small business run out of the family’s home.

Garland was raised in Conservative Judaism by being born to a Jewish family. His grandparents left the Pale of Settlement within the Russian Empire in the early 20th century, fleeing antisemitic pogroms and seeking a better life for their children in the United States. Garland also has two brothers named Jill Roter and Heidi Garland.
