Matika Wilbur Project 562

Her fourth major project to document contemporary Indigenous peoples was Project 562. Project 562 refers to the number of Indigenous North American tribes who were officially recognized by the United States at the time Matika started the work. However, the number has since changed and it reflects the ongoing legal efforts of individual tribes to regain legal status following the decimation of tribal status under the United States Termination policy.

“Project 562” started in 2012 as a photographic series. Matika sold everything she had in order to create this project and started traveling throughout all 50 states.  She utilized different forms of travel including foot, boat, plane, horse, and an RV. Matika encountered many tribal communities throughout her journey.

Most of those communities welcomed her and she has also found support within these communities.  Matica has come across more than 300 sovereign states in her journey. She is now aiming for a change within this evaporating race through video recordings,  audio, photographs, and conversations. “Project 562” continues to address construct cultural bridges, tribal sovereignty, and also honors a legacy in regards to the country.

Matika Wilbur Photograher

Matika started traveling in every part of the USA in November 2012. Her major goal was photographing members of all US tribes on their tribal lands. Matika notes that her grandmother came to her in a dream and she suggested to Matika to do this work of photographing a member from every federally recognized tribe. Up to date, Matika has traveled 250,000 miles documenting indigenous people.

For her expenses in a Kickstarter campaign, she raised more than  $35,000. Currently, she collaborates with tribal leaders as well as members in order to create the photographs. She conceives her project as an answer to photographs sone a century earlier of Indigenous Americans by Edward Curtis.
