The New York Jets drafted Mark in the first round (fifth overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. During his first three years at USC, Mark was a backup quarterback. He rose to prominence in 2007 due to injuries suffered by starting quarterback John David Booty. Also, Mark became popular within the community because of his Mexican-American heritage. In 2008, he was named the starter and led USC to a 12–1 record winning the Rose Bowl against Penn State.
Mark entered the 2009 NFL Draft and the Jets selected him in the first round although USC coach Pete Carroll and many scouts considered him too inexperienced. He led the Jets to the AFC Championship Game despite a subpar first season, which was a losing effort to the Indianapolis Colts. He was the fourth rookie quarterback in NFL history to win his first playoff game and the second to win two playoff games. As a result, Mark joined Ben Roethlisberger as the only two quarterbacks in NFL history to reach the conference championship in their first two seasons in the league. Mark and his team failed to reach the playoffs in the next two seasons which was a regression for both him and the team. Eventually, he was replaced by Greg McElroy towards the end of the 2012 season.
