Marie Kondo Family

She was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan. Marie has been interested in organizing since childhood. While in junior school, Marie used to run into the classroom to tidy up bookshelves while her classmates were playing in physical education class. Marie did not seek to be the class representative or the pet feeder whenever there were nominations for class roles. Instead,  she yearned to be the bookshelf manager to continue to tidy up books.

According to her, she experienced a breakthrough in organizing one day when she was obsessed with what she could throw away.  Marie had a kind of nervous breakdown and fainted.  She was unconscious for two hours and after waking up, she heard a mysterious voice, like some god of tidying telling her to look at her things more closely. And she realized her mistake. Marie was only looking for things to throw out. What she should be doing is finding the things she wants to keep.

She says that “Identifying the things that make you happy: that is the work of tidying.” Marie spent five years as an attendant maiden at a Shinto shrine. At the age of 19, she founded her organizing consulting business and was a sociology student at Tokyo Woman’s Christian University. Marie wrote her capstone thesis, titled “Tidying up as seen from the perspective of gender” in her senior year.

She is married to Takumi Kawahara. The couple was hitched in 2012. At the time they met,  Takumi was working in sales support and marketing at a corporation in Osaka. Once Marie’s career took off, her husband left his job to become her manager and, eventually, CEO of Konmari Media, LLC. The duo shares three kids, two daughters named Satsuki and Miko. Marie gave birth to a boy on 22 April 2021. After getting married,  the couple lived in Tokyo but later moved to San Francisco. As of 2022,  Marie and her family live in Los Angeles, California.

Marie Kondo Method | KonMari method

Her method of organizing is known as the KonMari method. It consists of gathering together all of one’s belongings, one category at a time, keeping only those things that “spark joy,” and then choosing a place for everything from then on. Marie advises starting the process of tidying up by “quickly and completely” discarding whatever it is in the house that does not spark joy.

This philosophy will help you acknowledge the usefulness of each belonging and help owners learn more about themselves. In return, this will help them be able to more easily decide what to keep or discard. Marie advises doing this by category of items and not their location in the house. Giving an example, all the clothes in the house should be piled up first, assessed for tokimeku, and later discarded if not needed.

This should be followed by other categories such as books, papers, miscellany, and mementos. Finding a designated place for each item in the house and making sure it stays there is another crucial aspect of the KonMari method. Marie says that her method is partly inspired by the Shinto religion. In Shintoism, cleaning and organizing things properly can be a spiritual practice.

This is concerned with the energy or divine spirit of things (kami) and the right way to live (kannagara). All essentially Shinto ways of living state that people should treasure what they have; treat the objects they own as not disposable, but valuable, no matter their actual monetary worth; and create displays so they can value each individual object are
