Maria was born Maria T. Aviso on October 28, 1970, in Cebu City, Philippines to her parents. She is the daughter of Edna who appeared on Maria’s show on May 7, 2021. She then got married to Brian Messner on September 9, 1999, and divorced in 2001. Her third husband was Sean Whitesell who worked as a film and TV actor, writer, and producer. The couple welcomed a son Gus Whitesell. Sadly, on December 28, 2015, Sean died of glioblastoma multiforme.

Maria’s third husband Sean Whitesell battled with Glioblastoma, a rare Brain Cancer Disease for 18 months. When her husband was diagnosed with a terminal illness, Maria found herself lost. Despite that, she had to put a smile on her face on Good Morning LA. Sean succumbed to the disease in December 2015. This incident led Maria to raise their son Gus alone and to also advocate for Glioblastoma and Brain Cancer Awareness.


Maria is a proud mother of two sons Desmond Quiban whom she welcomed while in high school and Gus Whitesell a son with Sean Whitesell. Desmond is 37 years old born in 1987.


She attained her high school diploma from Aiea High School. Maria then enrolled at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and pursued a bachelor’s degree in Journalism. She graduated with her Meteorology degree from Mississippi State University in 2015.


She released her book, You Can’t Do It Alone on June 9, 2020. In her book, Maria gives her story and teams up with licensed therapist Lauren Schneider to provide readers with a roadmap for walking through illness, death, and grief. The book also chronicles her journey with her husband. Additionally, the book contains 224 pages published by Hachette Books.

Maria then spent two years as the weather anchor where she anchored the daily newscasts at 5, 6, 9, and 11 p.m. for OCN (Orange County News Channel). While there, she produced weather graphics for the station’s nightly broadcasts.
