In 1976, he was chosen to compete at the Pan American Championships with Team USA where he won gold in the open Division and also a silver in the 95-kg weight class at the age of 19 years.
After enrolling in the ROTC, Leo used to work during the day and practice Judo during the night. He also won the World Military Games in 1987, 1984, 1982, and 1981. He also coaches judo in Atlanta.
