She was inducted into the Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame in 2012. The signature event took place at Norsk Høstfest. Lauraine’s books have sold over 5 million copies. Apart from writing books and articles, Lauraine also teaches at writers’ conferences across the country.

From the time, she was in high school, Lauraine dreamed of writing horse books for girls. But then life got in the way. She was an education major in college, and then got married and had children. Still, Lauraine always knew someday she was going to be a writer. As she looks back, she wrote a lot in those years but didn’t consider it real writing.
Her kids were teenagers when her mother heard about a writing conference in Portland OR. She got a mailing that Lauraine never heard of. It was a God thing. Initially, Lauraine wasn’t going to go, but when her mother offered to pay Lauraine’s way, she went. Lauraine was totally blown away. She had no idea all the different kinds of things there were to write. One of the best things about the conference was that Lauraine and two others formed a writing critique group. They met at the conference, and then met once a week to critique for the next five years.
Because of that group, Lauraine had to write something every week. She had that deadline. During that season, she wrote a little bit of everything. Then Mount St. Helens erupted. Immediately, Lauraine saw a story for kids in that. She had a horse named Cimarron who lived in her backyard. The horse became the secondary character in Tragedy on the Toutle. Lauraine wrote that one and loved it and knew immediately that she wanted to write something for adults on the mountain, too. But that story, The Way of Women, came much later.
