Larry Ellison ( Full name: Lawrence Joseph Ellison) is an American business magnate and investor. He is the co-founder of the American computer technology company Oracle Corporation and serves as its executive chairman and chief technology officer. Former, Larry served as the chief executive officer (CEO) of the company. Also, he is known for his 98% ownership stake in the sixth-largest island in the Hawaiian Archipelago called Lanai.

Larry remembers his adoptive mother as warm and loving compared to his austere, unsupportive, and often distant adoptive father, Louis Ellison.  Louis chose Larry’s last name “Ellison” to honor his point of entry into the United States where he settled on Ellis Island.  Louis served as a government employee and made a small fortune in Chicago real estate. However, he lost it during the Great Depression.

Although Larry was raised in a Reform Jewish home by his adoptive parents, he remained a religious skeptic. His adoptive parents attended synagogue regularly. Larry refused to have a bar mitzvah celebration when he reached 13. He says that his fondness for Israel is not connected to religious sentiments but rather a result of the innovative spirit of Israelis in the technology sector.

The company is owned by David H. Murdock. After the purchase, Larry owns 98% of Lanai, Hawaii’s sixth-largest island. He left California and moved to Lanai in December 2020. Larry purchased a 22-acre property in Manalapan, Florida in 2022 for $173 million. He bought the property from Jim Clark, who in turn had acquired it from the Ziff family.  This property is the most expensive residential property purchase in Florida’s history.

The victory returned The Cup to American shores for the first time since 1995. Larry was the crew member in the second race.
