Ken Ham The Ark | Ark Encounter

The Christian religious and Young Earth creationist theme park called Ark Encounter was opened in Grant County, Kentucky on July 7, 2016. The ark is 510 feet (155 m) long, 85 feet (26 m) wide, and 51 feet (16 m) high. Its centerpiece is a large representation of Noah’s Ark based on the Genesis flood narrative contained in the Bible.

A young-Earth creationist (YEC) organization called Answers in Genesis (AiG) operates the ark. The same organization operates the Creation Museum 45 miles (70 km) away in Petersburg, Kentucky. The main goal of the theme park is to promote pseudoscientific young-Earth creationist beliefs regarding the age of the universe, the age of the Earth, as well as the co-existence of man and non-avian dinosaurs.

Ken Ham Bill Nye Debate

He debated  Bill Nye, American science educator and engineer in February 2014 on the topic of whether young-Earth creationism is a viable model of origins in the contemporary scientific era. After the debate, critics expressed concern that the debate lent the appearance of scientific legitimacy to creationism while at the same time stimulating Ken’s fundraising.

Bil, who is popularly known as “Bill Nye the Science Guy” said gave a chance to “expose the well-intending Ken Ham and the support he receives from his followers as being bad for Kentucky, bad for science education, bad for the U.S., and thereby bad for humankind.

On the other hand, Ken said that publicity generated by the debate aided in stimulating the construction of the Ark Encounter theme park. Ark Encounter had been stalled for lack of funds. It was opened on July 7, 2016. The date (7/7), was chosen to correspond with the Bible verse Genesis 7:7, which describes Noah entering the ark. Bill visited Ark Encounter the following day and he and  Ken had an informal debate.

He and his team revived a Christian ministry’s long-stalled plans to build Noah’s Ark in the hills of Kentucky in 2014. Ken, the Creation Museum founder announced that a municipal bond offering had raised enough money to start the construction of Noah’s Ark estimated to cost about $73m. The organizing team did groundbreaking planned for May 2014 with the ark expected to be finished by the summer of 2016.
