Kelvin’s breakthrough performance came in the 2017 horror film titled It Comes at Night where he appeared as Travis. He gained wider recognition in 2019 for his role in Luce and Waves.
In 2012, Kelvin was cast in the film titled Ender’s Game, based on the 1985 novel. Later, he was upgraded to day-player and had a chance to interact with actors such as Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford, and Viola Davis. Kelvin credits Davis with making him take his acting career more seriously. Also, he has a small role in 12 Years a Slave and would later appear in an episode of WGN America’s Underground as well as the 2016 remake of Roots.
The two films were produced in his home state of Louisiana. Still, in 2016, Kelvin had a small role in Nate Parker’s film titled The Birth of a Nation. Initially, he was hesitant to participate in Roots in part since it would become his fourth portrayal of a slave. The other reason was that Kelvin did not have fond memories of watching the original as a child. In retrospect, he realized how different the two projects were. In August 2021, it was announced that Kelvin would star as the voice of young Scar in Barry Jenkins’s follow-up to The Lion King.
