Kay Warren Saddleback Church
When Kay and her husband arrived in the Saddleback Valley in December of 1979, what they had could only fit in the back of a U-Haul truck. Fresh out of seminary, her husband dreamed of coming up with a church that would be “a place where the hurting, the depressed, the confused can find love, acceptance, help, hope, forgiveness, and encouragement.”
By then many good Bible-teaching churches were already in Southern California. However, Kay’s husband, Pastor Rick turned his attention to those who didn’t attend church at all. Two weeks after they arrived in the Saddleback Valley, they started with a small Bible study, meeting with one other family in their small condo. Saddleback Valley Community Church had its very first public service on Easter of 1980.
Most of the people who showed up were non-believers and were about 200 in total. That started one of the most exciting journeys of growth that any other church had experienced in American history. In more than twenty years of ministry in Orange County, God has expanded the church’s influence. Currently, Saddleback Church has more than 200 ministries that serve the church as well as the community around.
