Katsuji Tanabe is a Mexican-American chef, He has worked inside LA’s most acclaimed kitchens such as the four-star Bastide Restaurant and Beverly Hills’ Mastro’s Steakhouse. He is the owner of the first authentic Kosher Mexican restaurant called MexiKosher Restaurant in Los Angeles. The restaurant is arguably the first of its kind in the entire United States.

Most recently, Katsuji expanded Mexikosher to the Upper West Side of New York City. He is now planning to open a more upscale dining experience Baranda in Los Angeles, named after his daughters Barbara and Miranda. Apart from being a chef, Katsuji is proud to serve his community as a personal mentor as well as a celebrity representative for Jewish Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Los Angeles. He offers his time and expertise for fundraising and also volunteer drives for the group.

Apart from that, the chef regularly works alongside the children that the group supports by teaching healthy eating and cooking alternatives. Katsuji admits he became addicted to the rush of the competition after competing on Top Chef season 12 in Boston and Top Chef Mexico. The chef is eager to prove he has what it takes to bring home the title.

At the Age of 18, he moved to Los Angeles and enrolled at Le Cordon Bleu. Katsuji took on internships in local restaurants. He also worked as a line cook. Although he did not win the competition, Katsuji was hired as the sous chef at Mastro’s Steakhouse in Beverly Hills shortly thereafter.

However, Katsuji doesn’t keep kosher outside his restaurant. Chef Katsuji simply found that kosher food was his calling. He always tells people that when they are chefs, they get to pick what they want to make. But Katsuji didn’t pick kosher. Kosher picked him. And because of it,  he has turned into a much better chef. Chef Katsuji started cooking at the age of six. He moved to Los Angeles with his mother at the age of 18 and he decided to get a proper culinary education.

One fateful evening, Katsuji received a call from another neighborhood restaurant called Shiloh’s Kosher Steakhouse, a glatt-kosher fine-dining establishment. They wanted to hire him for consulting work. Katsuji agreed, not yet even realizing that Shiloh’s was kosher.  He soon became executive chef and come up with dishes such as “bacon-wrapped scallops,” a “bacon cheeseburger,” and faux-pork chops. All, of course, without using any treif ingredients.

Katsuji excitedly decided to venture out on his own and open up Mexikosher in 2011, which is enthusiastically sought after by kosher foodies everywhere.  He has become famous for making his food a reflection of himself; flavorful, fun, and full of passion and personality! Serving everything from Mexican dishes such as steak tacos, burritos, and a variety of spectacular daily specials. Also, he has become world-renowned on television for both his charm and cooking skills.

The chef competed in  The Travel Channel’s Chow Masters and Food Network’s Chopped, which he won. Katsuji was a runner-up on Bravo TV’s Top Chef. He appeared as a contestant on the professional chef contender, Top Chef Mexico, on NBC’s Food Fighters. Also, he was a judge on Master Chef Mexico. Katsuji is now becoming a household name far beyond the kosher world.
