Her interest in weather sparked at a very early age. Katie was always the kid that asked to turn on the news before school instead of cartoons. Katie was fascinated with the various extremes that weather can bring–from huge winter storms to thunderstorms and tornadoes, to a nice summer day while growing up. She was also intrigued by the influence that the Great Lakes can have on weather, particularly with the formation of lake effect snow.
Katie also interned with the Doppler 9&10 Weather Team before she was hired full-time for her first on-air job. She is a member of the American Meteorological Society and has received their highest distinction as a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist.
Some of the distinctions that Katie has received include a rigorous written test of meteorological knowledge and a graded broadcast portion. Katie has also received awards from the Associated Press due to Best Weathercast in a large TV market with the 8News weather team in 2013 and in 2015 a meritorious award for Best Individual Weathercast.
