Kate Dawson journalist, Podcaster, and author. She currently serves as a senior lecturer in broadcast journalism at UT-Austin. She has produced about two-dozen documentaries including longer-form pieces for WCBS, Nightline, Fox, and independent films.  Kate considers herself a good storyteller. 

Over the past two decades, Kate has become a Superfan of network television news programs. She has come to lovingly refer to as “death shows.” They are seen briefly on CBS or NBC.  Flip right past them because they’re too gory, shows such as Dateline or 48 Hour Mysteries. Kate is an ardent devotee, her fascination with crimes is everlasting.

Kate has reported on her share of local crime stories in London, New York, Boston, and San Francisco. All were intriguing but none of them were pleasant. Apart from that, Kate served as a writer and producer at WCBS and ABC News Radio in New York. After that, she settled back home in Austin in 2005.  As a journalist, Kate Like investigations of any type such as social injustice is fascinating,  this career has been a wonderful journey for her.

She was born to her father and mother in the United States of America. Her father served as a criminal law professor at the University of Texas in Austin for almost twenty years. Both kate and her father started teaching at the age of 28. He began at UT and Kate began at Fordham University in New York.

Her father decided to start a clinic in 2003 in order to investigate cases of innocence aptly called the Actual Innocence Clinic. Following the death of her father, Kate became involved in the clinic. She organized a sort of metaphorical bridge between UT’s journalism school and the law school class. She co-taught the clinic for some years: Her journalism students learned about investigating cases while the law students learned basic journalism skills.

Kate escorted the law students into prison to interview prisoners. They  bristled at the sign that read: “We will shoot all hostages past this point.” She and the students went over case files, searched court records, and also filed public information requests. This was one of her favorite classes.
