Phil became CEO of Morgan Stanley following the 1997 merger of Morgan Stanley and Dean Witter, of which Phil was already CEO.
John returned to Morgan Stanley as CEO and Chairman of the Board on June 30, 2005, succeeding Phil. Despite the economic slump, he was credited for stabilizing the firm and reenergizing its culture and client brand. On September 10, 2009, John announced his retirement as CEO, which took effect on January 1, 2010. After more than 30 years as an investment banker, he retired from Morgan Stanley in 2011. Former co-president James P. Gorman took over as CEO after John.
