When he was diagnosed by his doctors that he would need a new kidney due to diabetes-related kidney failure, Jim was determined to avoid dialysis and started looking into getting a kidney transplant at the Cedars-Sinai Comprehensive Transplant Center. His family members, including Avila’s three children, quickly volunteered to give him one of their kidneys.
Jim’s youngest brother Jaie Avila who is also a TV news reporter agreed to donate one of his kidneys to Jim. Later on, the doctor immediately schedules the surgeries. He underwent a kidney transplant in April 2018 and now he has recovered from the kidney transplant surgery.
