He was torn between becoming a chemical engineer or a meteorologist because there is no school in Virginia that had Meteorology as a major. Jeff decided to to the top school in the country for forecasting and that was Penn State University. However, if the university turned him down planned he had a plan to attend Virginia Tech and major in Chemical Engineering but the university accepted him.

He joined 13News Now in August 1990 in Norfolk and has ever since managing the meteorology department at WVEC-TV. Jeff does his own forecasting and never looking at another person’s forecast. Therefore, the 13News Now audience gets forecasts that are different and more accurate than those from other stations where people have little or no training in Meteorology and rely primarily on the National Weather Service to tell them what to tell their views on matters of weather.
Prior to joining 13News, he worked as a Weekend meteorologist and weekday reporter for WTTG FOX 5 in Washington, D.C.from Novermber 1987 to 1990. Before that, Jeff worked as a meteorologist for WWBTand NBC12 Raycom Media in Richmond, Virginia from 1983 to 1987.
From January 1982 to 1883, he worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which is the umbrella organization for the National Weather Service. While there, Jeff worked with Dr. Vern Dvorak to develop methods of estimating the strength of tropical systems from satellite pictures. Moreover, this method still is used extensively by the National Hurricane Center to estimate how strong tropical systems are.
Additionally, he joined Accu-Weather in January 1981 in State College, Pennsylvania Area where he worked as a meteorologist. His job there was to call weathercasters who were not meteorologists and tell them what to say on television that night. Jeff also did radio forecasts for other clients including municipalities, power companies, and ski resorts.
