Jason Epstein (Full name Jason Wolkow Epstein) was an American editor and publisher. He held a Master of Arts degree from Columbia which he earned in 1949. In 1950, Jason joined Doubleday and Company as their editorial trainee. While there, he saw the need for cheap, well-made paperbacks of the kinds of books that his classmates were reading but could not afford to own in their hardcover editions.
With the support of Doubleday’s chief editor Ken McCormick, Jason launched Anchor Books. It was the first so-called Quality Paperbacks, which later became the dominant paperback format. Anchor Books won the Carey–Thomas Award in 1954. In 1958, Jason left Doubleday and became part of the Random House. There, he served as an editorial director until his retirement in 1999.

In 1979, Jason took up and forwarded the critic Edmund Wilson’s concept to the Library of America. With the support of the Ford Foundation as well as the National Endowment for the Humanities, they published the first volumes in 1982. later, Jason published The Reader’s Catalogue of 40,000 titles available by mail order. In 2004, Jason co-founded On Demand Books, the marketer of the Espresso Book Machine.
