James gave up his veterinary practice in Sacramento, California to be a full-time author. He has experience and expertise as an amateur spelunker and a certified scuba diver which had provided content for some of his novels.
These novels are often set in underground or underwater locations. He has published fantasy novels under the pen name James Clemens, such as Wit’ch Fire, Wit’ch War, Wit’ch Storm, Wit’ch Gate, Shadowfall (2005), Wit’ch Star, and Hinterland (2006).
