As a Democrat, James is also a media personality with expertise in U.S. elections. He has appeared frequently on cable news programs, in podcasts, and also in his public speeches.

He was born to his parents at a U.S. Army hospital at Georgia’s Fort Benning, where his dad was stationed during World War II. James is the oldest of eight children.  His mother, Lucille (née Normand), stayed behind in Carville, Louisiana where James grew up. However, she went to Ft. Benning long enough to have her firstborn son Lucille Carville. Lucille is a former school teacher, he spoke French at home and sold the World Book Encyclopedia door-to-door.

Lucille’s father, Chester James Carville, was a postmaster and he owned a general store. A neighborhood in the city of St. Gabriel, in Iberville Parish called Carville, Louisiana, located sixteen miles south of the capital city of Baton Rouge on the Mississippi River, was named after Jame’s paternal grandfather, Louis Arthur Carville. Louis was once the postmaster. Louis’ mother named Octavia Dehon was of Belgian parentage and married John Madison Carville, described as “Irish-born” and a “carpetbagger.” They both established the general store in 1882 operated by the family in Carville.

He graduated in 1962 from Ascension Catholic High School in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. Among Jame’s earliest political campaign work during his high school years was ripping down the campaign signs of a candidate for public office. From 1962 to 1966,  James attended Louisiana State University (LSU) but didn’t graduate at that time.

He characterized himself in a 1994 feature in Newsweek as “something less than an attentive scholar. I had fifty-six hours’ worth of Fs before LSU finally threw me out.” From 1966 to 1968,  James served a two-year enlistment in the United States Marine Corps where he was stationed stateside, at Camp Pendleton in San Diego. There,  James achieved the rank of Corporal.  He finished his studies at LSU at night after the conclusion of his military enlistment.  In 1970, he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in General Studies. In 1973, James earned his Juris Doctor degree.
