While there, he served as a reporter from January 2011 to February 2019. Ian covered the country’s uprising and subsequent 2013 coup for the station and was living in Egypt. Also, he reported on the civil wars in Libya and Syria, covering both sides of those conflicts.
Ian was injured in 2011 as rebels battled for control of Sirte. It was the last stronghold of Muammar Al Gaddafi, the Libyan leader. An RPG exploded next to him. The explosion killed a nearby paramedic. He covered the seven-week war in Gaza in the year 2014. Ian was the first foreign journalist to enter Turkey following the 2016 failed coup attempt. His work has also taken him to cover the terror attacks in London and the tensions on the Korean peninsula.
He relocated to Jerusalem in 2017 for CNN to cover news in Palestinian territories and Israel.
