Eve Ewing ( Full name: Eve Louise Ewing) is an American author, sociologist, poet, and visual artist from Chicago, Illinois.  Currently, she serves as the assistant professor at the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago.

Eve’s academic research in the sociology of education includes her 2018 book titled Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago’s South Side, a study of school closures in Chicago.  Formerly, Eve served as an editor at Seven Scribes. She is the author of the poetry collection Electric Arches released in September 2017. She published 1919 in 2019, it is a poetry collection centered around the Chicago race riot of 1919. Also, Eve authored the Ironheart comic book series for Marvel centered on the young heroine Riri Williams.

Eve Ewing Poems | Poet | 1919

Her collection of poems and children’s songs titled 1919 is based on the stoning and resulting drowning of Eugene Williams in Lake Michigan as well as the ensuing Chicago race riot of 1919. It has excerpts from “The Negro In Chicago: A Study On Race Relations And A Race Riot.” This is a text commissioned by the city of Chicago and written in the aftermath of the riots. An attempt to understand how and why the events occurred and what could be done to make sure that race riots never occur again.

They used excerpts from “The Negro in Chicago” at the top of  Eve’s poems in order to provide additional context for her writing. 1919  came out in 2019 and selected on,  LitHub Most Anticipated Reads of Summer 2019, NPR’s Best Books of 2019,  The Millions Must-Read Poetry of June 2019, O Magazine Best Books by Women of Summer 2019, Chicago Review of Books Best Poetry Book of 2019, and Chicago Tribune’s Notable Books of 2019.

Eve Ewing Ghosts In The Schoolyard

Her book on school closures titled Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago’s South Side, was published by the University of Chicago Press in October 2018. In the Schoolyard, Ghosts examines the demise of public schools in Chicago’s Bronzeville district following the demolition of public housing as well as analyzes community efforts to keep the schools open, such as a community-wide hunger strike. In this book, Eve introduces a concept called “institutional mourning”, referring to the multiple negative impacts experienced by the residents of areas where schools have been closed.

Her first book, a collection of poetry, prose, and visual art entitled Electric Arches came out on September 12, 2017, published by Haymarket Books. Eve has stated that the entire book is based on real-life incidents that have happened to her. Publishers Weekly named the book as one of its most anticipated books of the fall of 2017. Electric Arches won against 14,000 new releases calling it a “stunning debut”.  The Paris Review selected the same book as a staff pick for the week of September 1, 2017.

Elizabeth King, writing for the Pacific Standard described Electric Arches as “at once a portrait of [Eve’s Chicago] home, a tender letter to black youth, and a call to her audience to think beyond the confines of systemic racism.” In 2018, the bok won  Alex Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association of the American Library Association. It also won the 2017 Chicago Review of Books 2017 poetry award, as well as the Poetry Society of America’s Norma Farber First Book Award.

Eve Ewing Ironheart

The fictional superhero Ironheart (Riri Williams) appears in American comic books published by Marvel Comics he character was created by writers Brian Michael Bendis, and artist Mike Deodato in 2016. Later,  Eve and Kevin Libranda redesigned it. In the Marvel Cinematic Univers, Dominique Thorne is set to portray Williams set to debut in the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever film in 2022 prior to appearing on the streaming television series titled Ironheart currently in development for Disney+
