Elaine Chao (Full Name: Elaine Lan Chao ) is a popular American businesswoman and retired government official who worked as the United States Secretary of Labor in the administration of George W. Bush from 2001 until 2009 and as the United States Secretary of Transportation in the administration of Donald Trump from 2017 until 2021. Being a member of the Republican Party, Elaine was the first Asian-Pacific American woman ever to work in a presidential cabinet.

She served for financial institutions prior to being appointed to many senior positions in the Department of Transportation under Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, such as Chair of the Federal Maritime Commission (1988–1989) and Deputy Secretary of Transportation (1989–1991).
