Demetri Martin Biography

Demetri Martin is a popular American comedian, cartoonist, actor, writer, director, and musician. He worked as a contributor on The Daily Show. In stand-up, Demetri is recognized for his deadpan delivery, playing his guitar for jokes, and his satirical cartoons. He appeared as Ice Bear in Cartoon Network’s We Bare Bears.

Demetri sold his movie concept Will to DreamWorks and is expected to participate in a key supporting role. In October 2010, he also signed a blind script deal with CBS to produce, write, and star in his television series. Following CBS was shown the pilot for the series, they decided not to air it.

On October 2, 2012, Demetri released his second comedy album, Demetri Martin. Standup Comedian. He voices Ice Bear in the Cartoon Network series We Bare Bears, and the narrator in its spin-off series We Baby Bears. Demetri wrote, directed, edited, and starred in the 2016 film Dean.

Early Life And Education

He was born in New York City into a Greek-American family. Demetri’s parents are Lillian (1951–2019) and Dean C. Martin (1948–1994). His father was a Greek Orthodox priest. Demetri’s grandparents hail from Sparta and Crete. He was raised in Toms River, New Jersey. He has two younger siblings Spyro and Christene.

Demetri joined and graduated in 1991 from Toms River High School North. In 1995 he graduated from Yale University earning a B.A. in History. Although admitted to Harvard Law School, Demetri instead decided to attend New York University School of Law upon earning a full scholarship. He withdrew from law school prior to the start of his final year, opting to do comedy over earning his Juris Doctor degree.

Demetri is married to his wife Rachael Beame. The couple married on June 1, 2012, in Santa Monica, California. Demetri and his wife have a daughter named Eve and a son named Paul. They now live in Los Feliz, California.

Before, Demetri was married to a former high school classmate named Jen Martin. He and his ex-wife started dating following high school and got married in 1998 when he was at NYU Law School and she was attending NYU Medical School. They divorced in 2000.

In 2001, Demetri caught his first big break in stand-up comedy when he starred on Comedy Central’s stand-up showcase Premium Blend. At the 2003 Edinburgh Festival Fringe he received the Perrier Award with his show If I…. In 2004 the show was turned into a BBC television special. From 2003 until 2004, Demetri wrote for Late Night with Conan O’Brien. In 2004, he had his own Comedy Central Presents stand-up special. Demetri’s special was divided into three parts.

Afterward in June 2009, it was reported his show had been renewed for a second season. The second season debuted, again on Comedy Central, on February 4, 2010. Demetri has said that Important Things will not come back for a third season.


Standup comedian Demetri will tour Sandy, UT, on August 3, 2024. On July 12, 2024, he will tour St. Louis, MO. After that, on July 26, 2024, Demetri will tour Hattiesburg, MS.
