He began playing tennis at age four. David played in his first tournament at the age of 8 years. In 1984, he won the Minnesota State High School tennis title as a freshman. For his last two-and-a-half years of high school, David trained at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy. He played for one year at Stanford and also t competed on the professional tour for 13 years. David won the US Open junior title in 1987 and was the No. 1 ranked junior player in the US.
He helped Stanford University’s tennis team win the NCAA team title in 19888. In return, David received the Block S Award as the most outstanding freshman athlete at Stanford. On July 4, 1988, he turned professional. David won his first top-level singles title at the U.S. Clay Court Championships in Kiawah Island, South Carolina in 1990. In the same year, he was a runner-up in the US Open men’s doubles (with Paul Annacone).
He had the most significant highlights of his career the following year ( 1991). David won the Grand Slam Cup in Munich after beating Michael Chang in straight sets in the final 7–5, 6–2, 6–4. At Wimbledon, he reached the semifinals of singles after beating Andre Agassi, Jan Gunnarsson, Ivan Lendl, Cédric Pioline, Petr Korda, in the quarterfinals prior to being knocked out by Boris Becker.

At the Australian Open, David was a men’s doubles runner-up partnering with Patrick McEnroe who was his former Stanford teammate. In July 1991, David reached his career-high singles ranking of world No. 12. All through his playing career, David won three top-level singles and three doubles titles. In 1993, David represented the US in Davis Cup (v. Australia, 1993).
David defeated highly ranked players such as Michael Chang, Jim Courier, Stefan Edberg, Ivan Lendl, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi and reached the semifinals or better in either singles or doubles of every Grand Slam tournament. David retired from the professional tour in 2001 after a series of injuries. Since his retirement, he has played in some senior tour events. in 2014, he won the “Wimbledon Over 35 Doubles” championship in 2004 (with T.J. Middleton).
He embarked on a new career in radio, writing, and speaking in 2002. Currently, David serves as the producer and host of a live talk radio program called The Christian Worldview. The program is broadcasted on 250 stations in the US. Apart from that, he is a tennis columnist for the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. As an author, David has published two books so far. One of then titled University of Destruction: Your Game Plan for Spiritual Victory on Campus which was published by Bethany House in 2005. The other book titled My Boy, Ben—A Story of Love, Loss and Grace was published by Tristan Publishing in 2014.
