David Tennant ( Full name: David John Tennant) is a Scottish actor. He gained fame for his role as the tenth incarnation of the Doctor from 2005 to 2010 and 2013 in the BBC science-fiction TV show Doctor Who. David reprised the role from 2022 to 2023 as the fourteenth incarnation.

His other notable roles include Giacomo Casanova in the BBC comedy-drama serial Casanova in 2005, Barty Crouch Jr. in the fantasy film Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire ( both in 2005), Peter Vincent in the horror remake Fright Night in 2011,  DI Alec Hardy in the ITV crime drama series Broadchurch from 2013 to 2017, Kilgrave in the Netflix superhero series Jessica Jones from 2015 to 2019, Crowley in the Amazon Prime fantasy series Good Omens (since 2019), and Phileas Fogg in Around the World in 80 Days in 2021.

David has worked on stage as well. He portrayed the title character in a 2008 Royal Shakespeare Company production of Hamlet which was later filmed for television. Also, David worked as a voice actor in The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists!  in 2011, Ferdinand in 2017, Final Space from 2018 to 2021, gen: LOCK ( since 2019), the How to Train Your Dragon films (from 2010 to 2019), and Scrooge McDuck in DuckTales (from 2017 to 2021). David received the National Television Award for Special Recognition in 2015.

He was born in Bathgate, West Lothian to his parents Helen (née McLeod; 1940–2007) and Alexander “Sandy” McDonald (1937–2016). The latter was a  minister who served as the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland. David grew up with his brother Blair and sister Karen in Ralston, Renfrewshire, where his dad served as the local minister.

Two of David’s maternal great-grandparents, William and Agnes Blair, were Northern Irish Protestants who originated from County Londonderry and were among the signatories of the Ulster Covenant in 1912. William was a member of the Orange Order. David’s maternal grandfather, footballer Archie McLeod, met William and Agnes’ daughter Nellie while playing for Derry City FC. Archie was descended from tenant farmers from the Isle of Mull.

He attended Saturday classes at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. The school was by then known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. David passed an audition for the Academy at the ag of 16 and became one of their youngest students. He studied there between the ages of 17 and 20. He took his stage name from Pet Shop Boys frontman Neil Tennant after he discovered that there was another David McDonald already represented by the actor’s union Equity.
