David Miranda is a Brazilian politician, who is currently the Federal Congressman representing the state of Rio de Janeiro, since he was sworn in on February 1, 2019, and affiliated with the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL). Previously, David was a City Councilman representing the city of Rio de Janeiro.
David led the campaign for the Brazilian government to grant political asylum to Edward Snowden. He closely worked with his husband, Glenn Greenwald, to publish the revelations contained in Snowden’s leaks detailing mass surveillance by the National Security Agency.
David met with Luciana Genro, the PSOL candidate for the 2014 Brazilian presidential election, and convinced her to extend asylum to Snowden if she won the election. Various public Brazilian figures supported the campaign, which failed to convince the government of Dilma Rousseff.
