David Letterman Biography

David Letterman is a popular American comedian, writer, television host, and producer who was the host of late-night television talk shows for 33 years. He now hosts the talk show My Next Guest Needs No Introduction on Netflix. On February 1, 1982, he started hosting Late Night with David Letterman on NBC.

Until May 2015, David was hosting Late Show with David Letterman on CBS. On average, he has hosted 6,080 episodes of Late Night and Late Show. As a television and film producer, David has produced his shows The Late Late Show and many primetime comedies, the most successful of which was the CBS sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. Many late-night hosts have cited his influence.

Following graduating from Ball State in 1969, David started his career as a radio talk show host on WNTS and on Indianapolis television station WLWI (which transformed its call sign to WTHR in 1976) as an anchor and weatherman. He got some attention for his book on-air delivery, which included appreciating a tropical storm for being upgraded to a hurricane, and for predicting hailstones “the size of canned hams”.

He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, to his parents Harry Joseph Letterman and Dorothy Marie Letterman Mengering. David has two sisters Gretchen and Janice. His dad was a florist while his mother worked as a secretary for the Second Presbyterian Church of Indianapolis. David’s father survived a heart attack at the age of 36.

Feeling losing his father was constantly with him as he grew up. Harry died of a second heart attack in 1973 aged 57. David’s mom Dorothy died of natural causes on April 11, 2017, at the age of 95 at her home in Carmel, Indiana. He studied at Broad Ripple High School. Later on, David enrolled at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, and graduated in 1969.

David was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, the son of the late Harry Joseph Letterman and Dorothy Marie Letterman Mengering. He was raised on the north side of Indianapolis, in the Broad Ripple area, about 12 miles (19 km) from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. David enjoyed collecting model cars, such as racers. In 2000, he disclosed in an interview for Esquire that, while young, he admired his dad’s ability to tell jokes and be the life of the party.
