David Lat ( Full name: David Benjamin Lat) is an American lawyer, blogger, author, and legal commentator. He founded a website about law firms and the legal profession called Above the Law. Before he started blogging, David attended Harvard College and Yale Law School. He worked as a law clerk for a federal appeals judge (Diarmuid F. O’Scannlain) after law school.

Diarmuid is an associate at Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz, and an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the appeals division in the District of New Jersey. David started blogging anonymously for the judicial gossip blog called “Underneath Their Robes.” He revealed his identity in an interview with Jeffrey Toobin of The New Yorker in November 2005.

Shortly thereafter, David launched his own blog website Above the Law featuring news about law firms and the legal profession and legal gossip. He published his debut novel titled Supreme Ambitions in December 2014. As of May 2021, David’s main writing outlet is his Substack newsletter, Original Jurisdiction, which he describes as his “primary source of income.”
