Dave Chappelle ( Full name: David Khari Webber Chappelle) is an American stand-up comedian and actor. He is best known for his satirical comedy sketch series titled Chappelle’s Show which run from 2003 to 2006. The series in which Dave starred until quitting in the middle of production during the third season.  After a hiatus, Dave returned to performing stand-up comedy across the U.S.

By 2006, Esquire called him the “comic genius of America.”  He was called “the best” by a Billboard writer in 2013. Rolling Stone ranked Dave No. 9 in their “50 Best Stand Up Comics of All Time” in 2017. He has appeared in several films such as Robin Hood: Men in Tights in 1993, The Nutty Professor in 1996, Con Air in 1997, You’ve Got Mail in 1998, Blue Streak in 1999, Undercover Brother in 2002, Dave Chappelle’s Block Party in 2005, Chi-Raq in 2015, and A Star Is Born in 2018.

He was born to his parents William David Chappelle III and Yvonne Seon (née Reed, formerly Chappelle),[14] in Washington, D.C. William was a professor of vocal performance and the dean of students at Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio. Yvonne worked for Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba. Patrice is a Unitarian Universalist minister and served as a professor and university administrator at several institutions such as Wright State University and Prince George’s Community College. Dave has a stepmother and a stepbrother. He was brought up in  Silver Spring, Maryland.

He starred in his sixth and final Netflix special The Closer on October 5, 2021. In The Closer, Dave made jokes about gay and transgender people. He particularly emphasized transgender women, whom some called transphobic. He simultaneously argued that he was not anti-transgender. In his argument, Dave brought up his opposition to North Carolina’s anti-transgender bathroom laws and his friendship with the late Daphne Dorman.

The Closer was met with backlash, including from students of  Dave’s alma mater Duke Ellington School, due to what some called “transphobic jokes” within his standup, especially where he identified himself as a T.E.R.F. Netflix employees organized a walkout on October 20, demonstrating their support of the transgender community.

They claimed that Dave’s set is an example of the rhetoric that leads to transgender inequality and violence against transgender people. The protestors demanded that The Closer be taken off of Netflix. Ted Sarandos, Netflix C.E.O. acknowledged that “storytelling has real impact in the real world.” However, he denied taking down the special, as he stated he “does not believe it falls into hate speech.”

In the 1998 comedy film titled Half Baked which he co-wrote, Dave had his first lead role. Also, he starred in the ABC comedy series titled  Buddies in 1996. Dave signed a $20-million-per-release comedy-special deal with Netflix in 2016 and released six stand-up specials under the deal. The comedian has received countless accolades, including five Emmy Awards and three Grammy Awards. Also, he received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. In 2017, Dave received his first Emmy for his guest appearance on Saturday Night Live.

He received a Grammy Award in 2018 for his Netflix-produced comedy album titled The Age of Spin & Deep in the Heart of Texas. Another Netflix special called Equanimity featuring Dave was nominated for three Emmys in 2018 and received the award for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded). He was selected to receive the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2019. The price is presented by the Kennedy Center as America’s highest comedy honor. Sticks & Stones earned Dave his third consecutive Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album in 2020.

Rogue Pictures, which is a Universal Pictures’ genre division, released the film in the U.S. on March 3, 2006. It was successful after grossing a total of $11.7 million on a $3 million budget. Dave performed impromptu stand-up shows in Los Angeles in June 2005 then went on a tour that started in Newport, Kentucky, not far from his Ohio home.
